The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
