Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
