British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he said. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
