UEFA has commenced a disciplinary case concerning Chelsea winger Pedro Neto following an incident where he shoved a ball boy during a Champions League loss against Paris St‑Germain.
The Portugal international, Neto, knocked the attendant in stoppage time of Wednesday's knockout stage first leg in Paris – a match in which Chelsea lost heavy defeat – an action that led to the boy to fall off his seat.
This provoked a heated exchange between both sets of players.
Officials stated proceedings have been instigated against Neto on grounds of "unsporting behaviour" in accordance with the official rules.
"Disciplinary officials will take a decision regarding this matter at a later date," European football's governing body stated.
The Chelsea player apologised for the incident and blamed getting swept up "by the heat of the moment" while he was attempting to regain possession of the match ball.
"I'm not like this. It happened in the passion of the game and I want to apologise. I gave him my shirt. I deeply regret it - I owe him an apology," Neto explained to broadcasters.
"I have limited French, and [Portugal team-mate] Vitinha stepped in and told him I was not like this.
"Finally he [the ball boy] laughed and I gave him my shirt and said sorry about 35 times. He understood it was a mistake and was happy with how it was resolved."
The London club welcome PSG in the upcoming second leg for the return fixture, following a match against Newcastle to Stamford Bridge on Saturday in the Premier League.
