Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
