Bolsonaro detained after being deemed a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."
