A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Grows

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule presented on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.

The industry were examined under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
